Toronto Cocktail Conference
EVENT: Toronto Cocktail Conference
WHERE: Toronto, Ontario
WHEN: August 12-14, 2019
In our Cocktail Culture blog we want to keep you up to date with all of the most unique and interesting cocktail and liquor events throughout the world. Stay informed. Stay thirsty
There are events like Whisky Live New York and The Kentucky Bourbon Affair that focus on one particular type of spirit. Those events celebrate everything you can do with that type of alcohol, but what if you're interested in more?
Well, for those who are interested in a variety of different liquors, then the 2019 Toronto Cocktail Conference is for you. This event, which spans from August 12 to 14, is for a variety of people: the professional bartender, the amateur mixologist, and the cocktail lover. While the 2019 schedule and tickets have not been released for the event yet (tickets will be on sale on May 21), last year's Toronto Cocktail Conference gives us a glimpse of what's to come this August.
The Toronto Cocktail Conference is correctly labelled as a conference because it hosts a variety of seminars throughout the event. You may think that these seminars are only for professional bartenders, but that's not the case: many seminars are open to anyone who wants to learn more about the world of cocktails.
One 2018 seminar called “Seasoning Your Cocktails – Understanding the Basics of Bitters” educates people with in-depth knowledge about bitters, a common cocktail ingredient that doesn't often get a lot of attention. This seminar not only reviewed the history of bitters, as it was used as traditional medicine, but also how to make your own bitters to use in your cocktails and food (if you're curious about bitters, please visit this blog post).
This is just one of the many educational seminars that are held throughout the week that cover other topics such as vermouth, grain spirits, and even methods to maintain a successful relationship as a bartender.
In addition to a multitude of seminars, the Toronto Cocktail Conference also hosts bartender competitions, allowing you to watch some of the world's best mixologists in action. There's a special cocktail menu that runs during the competition, so you can sip on a nice cocktail while you watch these bartenders vie for the title.
Furthermore, the Toronto Cocktail Conference also invites speakers from the industry to share their knowledge of the cocktail world. One speaker who has been confirmed for this year's event is Camper English, an international cocktails writer and educator. English is renowned in the cocktail world as he is the innovator of the ‘directional freezing' technique.
Finally, there's always a huge party on the last day to end the conference in style. Moreover, the closing party usually has a theme; for example, the 2018 theme was anti-waste. This meant that every drink featured was anti-waste, and companies like Absolute Vodka and Olmeca Altos Tequila were sponsors who served drinks.
One cool thing about the 2018 party was the $5 ‘trashy cocktails' that were served all night long, ensuring that you can get a good buzz on a budget. While the 2019 closing party theme hasn't been announced yet, you can expect to see something very soon.
